I think Haridas Das was quite proud of discovering this manuscript in at the Radha Damodar library in 1939, as he saved it from being consigned to the Yamuna. He had been searching for a book of this type for some time, as it is mentioned by Kaviraj in the Chaitanya Charitamrita, [I]govinda-virudavali ara tahara laksana[/I] (Madhya 1.39). He subsequently wrote an article on the genre, which was reproduced in Gaudiya Vaishnava Abhidhan. The virudavali was rare in northern India, at least in Rupa Goswami's time, and it seems that Gaudiya Vaishnavas were the main group to have adopted it as a medium. I will try to reproduce Haridas Das' article on my website and will give a link here when I do.
